Word of the Day: Terranormative

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

terranormative (adj.): of or pertaining to the practices and institutions that legitimize and privilege the attitudes, viewpoints, and social mores of the Earth over those of other planets

During the recent lunar eclipse, Martin pointed out that it’s just plain not fair that we refer to our satellite as “THE moon,” when everyone knows there are literally billions of moons in existence. This inexorably led to the horrifying realization that everything we do or say is so terranormative as to make the Sensitive People Edified against Discriminatory Statements (or SPEDS) absolutely gelatinous with indignation. Keep an ear out for your own terranormativity and you may well learn something unpleasant about yourself, too.

One Response to “Word of the Day: Terranormative”

  1. Acknowledging the endless repurcussions of every terranormative sentiment I’ve ever uttered…umm.. [something great should go here] ‘makes my flesh turn necrotic and start to fall off’ AHH there we go.
Also, isn’t “gelatinous with indignation” Jellonormative?
