Word of the Day: Airplane

Monday, February 26th, 2007

airplane (n.): a heavier-than-air aircraft kept aloft by the upward thrust exerted by the passing air on its fixed wings and driven by propellers, jet propulsion, etc. Etym: Originally aeroplane, from French aƩro-, air, + planer, to soar

I didn’t really sleep last night, but for the 20 minutes or so that I did, I dreamt a plane, like a miniature version of the Space Shuttle, crashed in Park Slope, somewhere near the intersection of 7th Avenue and about 11th or 12th Street. I had just left someone’s birthday party, in a bit of a huff, and was walking up 5th Avenue when I saw the plane flying very low and nosing downwards. It appeared to right itself just before dropping out of the sky completely with an enormous explosion, puff of smoke, and raging blaze. I tried to call 911, but my phone was stuck in text messaging mode.
